Head and Neck Examination: Documentation of findings
A critical component of the head and neck examination includes documentation. Part II of the Head and Neck Examination course series will provide an overview of thorough documentation of findings that can contribute to the difference between early and late stage diagnosis of medical conditions including malignancies. At the end of the program the participant will be able to:

1. Provide a standardized method for documenting intra oral findings.
2. Provide a baseline for subsequent comparison.
3. Develop an office protocol for course of action taken and follow up upon detecting a lesion.
4. Discuss documentation as a legally accountable standard of care action.
5. Gain knowledge of data collection forms utilized for providing complete documentation of findings.

Kathi R. Shepherd is an Associate Professor and was named the Assistant Dean for Educational Development and Assessment at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry in 2015. She earned a BS in Dental Hygienein 1983 from the University of Detroit and an MS in Health Care Education in 1995 from the University of Detroit Mercy. She practiced as a dental hygienist continually until retiring from private practice three years ago. Prior to her current position, she was the Dental Hygiene Program Director and the Director of Outcomes Assessment for the School of Dentistry. Professor Shepherd completed a four year term as the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) appointed Commissioner for the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) where she also served as a member of the CODA Task Force on Dental Therapy Education and Standards. Professor Shepherd also served as an ex officio member of the ADHA Council on Education during her tenure as the Dental Hygiene Commissioner and has also held various American Dental Education Association leadership positions. Her publications and professional presentations focus on dental and dental hygiene education as well as dental hygiene care.
