Dental Hygiene Treatment Planning

Achieving Patient Care Goals: Are You Using a Contemporary Dental Hygiene Care Plan?

Comprehensive patient care involves a team approach requiring each member of the health care team to apply his or her expertise on the patient's behalf. This includes a dental hygiene care plan that provides individualized education, prevention strategies, treatment, and oral health evaluation. The Healthy People 2030 Report recognizes two needs that can be addressed specifically by dental hygienists. These include raising awareness about the importance of oral health and its relationship to overall health, and encouraging the acceptance and adoption of prevention measures to improve oral health. Development of a dental hygiene care plan creates an opportunity for achieving this standard of care.

This seminar will provide a review of various models for developing a practical, comprehensive, in office dental hygiene care plan aimed at enabling a patient to achieve their individualized oral health care goals. By the end of the program participants will be able to:

1. Gain knowledge of various theoretical frameworks for comprehensive dental hygiene care planning.

2. Identify instruments assisting in the development of a dental hygiene diagnosis congruent with dental diagnoses.

3. Provide effective communication techniques that will result in care plan acceptance by patients.

4. Implement evaluation methods measuring success of goals specified in the dental hygiene care plan.

5. Provide accurate documentation allowing not only verification of those services identified in the dental hygiene care plan that have been rendered, but also monitoring of goal achievement.
