Radiography
for Dental Auxiliary
Course Description:
This lecture program is presented on the basic principles of physics and biology of dental radiography, including emphasis of radiation health and safety, film exposure, analysis of pitfall and correction of such, processing techniques along with interpretation of radiographs for mounting. The participant will have the opportunity to demonstrate exposing, processing and mounting a full mouth series of films in the lab portion of the program.
Lecture: 14-15 hours / Lab: approx. 1-2 hours completed at registrant's dental office
Course Objectives:
Give a brief history of dental radiography
Describe production of X-Radiation
Identify controlling factors during exposure
Demonstrate intraoral and extraoral exposing techniques
State benefits and hazards of ionizing radiation
Identify dental anatomical landmarks
Identify common film inadequacies and correction of errors
Explain somatic and genetic effects of radiation
Knowledge of radiosensitive and radioresistant cells
Identify components of intraoral and extraoral film packets
Discussion of Digital Image: Direct and Indirect
List steps in manual and automatic processing techniques
List components and chemicals of films and processing solutions
Understand labeling and storing of radiographic records
Describe the difference between paralleling and bisecting exposing techniques
Sherri Doig, CDA, CDPMA, RDA (AMT), is the founder of Dental Auxiliary Educators and serves as its director and educational consultant. She served as the Executive Director for Michigan Dental Association’s largest dental component from 2000 thru 2010. In addition to managing and directing the day-to-day operations of the society, Sherri was instrumental in organizing and planning the component’s annual continuing educational conference. Ms. Doig was additionally in the leadership role of the annual Give Kids A Smile of the Detroit -Oakland -Macomb / University of Detroit Mercy event. Sherri served as the Director of the Dental Assisting Program at the Michigan Paraprofessional Training Institute from 1985 to 1991. From 1991 to 2000 she served as a Dental Assisting Instructor in the Garden City Public Schools. During this time she founded Dental Auxiliary Educators where she served as a dental educational consultant. Ms. Doig also has served as President of both the Southwestern Dental Assistants Society and Michigan Dental Assistants Association. Additionally, she has served on a variety of committees and task forces for the Michigan Dental Association and has served as President of the Association of Component Society Executives of the American Dental Association. Most recently, Sherri was presented with honorary membership in the Michigan section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
PEAK Education & Training is designated as an Approved PACE Program Provider by the Academy of General Dentistry. The formal continuing education programs of this program provider are accepted by AGD for Fellowship, Mastership and membership maintenance credit.
