This series of 1-hour sessions examines dental literature with regards to the strength of the information/evidence presented. Participants are trained to assess papers using a process that includes four components: PICO (patient population or problems, intervention, comparison, and outcome). The development of a collection of evidence-based dental (EBD) literature will be posted for use as a reference to the procedures used at University of Louisville School of Dentistry (ULSD).
At the completion of attending these sessions, the participant will be able to;
• Understand scientific and investigative nomenclature, e.g. odds ratio, systematic review, meta-analysis
• Assess dental literature using the PICO questions
• Stress a patient-centered approach in treatment decisions while understanding the most current scientific knowledge.
Outcome assessment: participants will be able to recommend appropriate EBD to colleagues and students that will be posted on the ULSD website.

Journal Club meets every 3rd Monday of the month from Noon - 1:00 p.m. Registration required per meeting.

About Dedra M. Hayden, APRN-BC; Wendy S. Hupp, DMD
Dedra Hayden has been a Nurse Practitioner for 3 years with a major focus being on Primary Care. She has been a Registered Nurse for 19 years and has experience in acute care, hospital administration, outpatient diabetes management, and program development. Currently, she teaches at the University of Louisville, in both the School of Nursing and School of Dentistry.
Dr. Wendy S. Hupp is currently an associate professor of Oral Medicine and member of the Department of General Dentistry and Oral Medicine at the University of Louisville, School of Dentistry (ULSD). Her duties include management of medically complex patients with the residents, dental and dental hygiene students, and lecturing to all levels from post-doctoral to freshmen. Dr. Hupp graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine and practiced general dentistry in Wayne, Pennsylvania for nearly six years. She joined the U.S. Navy Dental Corps and was stationed with the Marines at Camp LeJeune during the first Gulf War, then received her residency training in Oral Diagnosis, Oral Medicine, and Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Hupp is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine, and moved to the ULSD Faculty in July, 2007. She lectures nationally on the treatment of medically complex patients, pharmacology, HIV/AIDS, clinical oral pathology, and women’s health.
