This course will present an overview of the assessment, and evidence-based practices in the pharmacologic management of dental pain. It will also outline the criteria for the appropriate selection and prescription of analgesics commonly used in dental practice including NSAID’s, narcotic (opioid) analgesics, and non-opioid centrally acting analgesics, as well as combinations of these agents, for relief of dental pain. Specific considerations for various patient populations including medically compromised patients, patients with a history of substance abuse, and those taking concurrent medications with the potential for adverse interactions will be discussed.
This course will also review the use of the Kentucky All Scheduled Prescription Electronic Reporting System (KASPER), and provisions important to the prescribing of controlled substances by dentists in the Kentucky Controlled Substances Act, and Dental Practices and Prescription Writing regulations (201 KAR 8:541).
Kentucky Board of Dentistry Emergency Regulation for Continuing Education Requirement (KASPER) See Page 11, No. 23, Section 10, a thru f Dentists are required to complete 3 hours of continuing education that relates to the use of the electronic monitory system, pain management or addiction disorders prior to renewing their license every renewal cycle.
About F. John Firriolo, DDS, PhD
Dr. F. John Firriolo is a Professor of Oral Medicine at the University of Louisville, School of Dentistry and has been a full-time member of the faculty since June 1991. He serves as the director of the Division of Oral Medicine within the Department of General Dentistry and Oral Medicine. Dr. Firriolo received his DDS degree from the University of Maryland in 1986 and then completed a general practice residency at Staten Island University Hospital, New York. In 1991, Dr. Firriolo completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial pathology at the University of Maryland and received a PhD degree in oral pathology in 1994. Dr. Firriolo’s lecture/teaching responsibilities include general and oral pathology, oral medicine, clinical dental pharmacology, and internal medicine as it relates to dentistry. He is a member of the University of Louisville Dental Practice Associates and practices oral medicine and clinical oral pathology. He is also a member of the consulting medical/dental staff at the University of Louisville Health Sciences Center, University Hospital, Department of Dentistry. Dr. Firriolo has co-authored a dental textbook, and published numerous journal articles in the area of oral diagnosis, oral medicine, and the dental management of medically complex patients. From 2004 to 2010 he served as co-editor of the Medical Management and Pharmacology Update section of “Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology”. In 2011, he was appointed as the Associate Editor of the Oral Medicine section of that journal.
