Dental health care providers are challenged daily with the large number of prescription and over-the-counter medications available to patients. New Kentucky state regulations have mandated the use of an electronic surveillance system to help detect the misuse of prescription medications (KASPER). The use of this system will be detailed, as well as a discussion of drug addiction and substance abuse, and some strategies for helping patients manage these problems.
Kentucky Board of Dentistry Emergency Regulation for Continuing Education Requirement (KASPER) See Page 11, No. 23, Section 10, a thru f. Dentists are required to complete 3 hours of continuing education that relates to the use of the electronic monitory system, pain management or addiction disorders prior to renewing their license every renewal cycle.
At the conclusion of this course, the participant should understand:

• Appropriate patient counseling

About Wendy S. Hupp, DMD
Dr. Wendy S. Hupp is currently an associate professor of Oral Medicine and member of the Department of General Dentistry and Oral Medicine at the University of Louisville, School of Dentistry (ULSD). Her duties include management of medically complex patients with the residents, dental and dental hygiene students, and lecturing to all levels from post-doctoral to freshmen. Dr. Hupp graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine and practiced general dentistry in Wayne, Pennsylvania for nearly six years. She joined the U.S. Navy Dental Corps and was stationed with the Marines at Camp LeJeune during the first Gulf War, then received her residency training in Oral Diagnosis, Oral Medicine, and Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Hupp is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine, and moved to the ULSD Faculty in July, 2007. She lectures nationally on the treatment of medically complex patients, pharmacology, HIV/AIDS, clinical oral pathology, and women’s health.
