Inconsistent reports on prognosis have undermined the support for endodontic treatment, especially for persistent endodontic disease. Consequently, clinicians increasingly forego endodontic treatment in favor of implants. Referencing the CURRENT BEST EVIDENCE will eliminate the inconsistency and promote communication of endodontic prognosis. This two-part lecture will define the prognosis for healing and functional retention after nonsurgical and surgical treatment highlighting the current best evidence. Outcome predictors will be identified and the effectiveness of treatment techniques debated.
At conclusion, participants should be able to:
• Describe the methodological considerations for clinical research aimed at studying the prognosis.
• List the studies comprising the current best evidence for nonsurgical and surgical endodontic treatmen.
•Summarize the prognosis for periapical healing and functional retention after nonsurgical and surgical endodontic treatment.
•List the clinical factors that influence the prognosis after nonsurgical and surgical endodontic treatment.
•Debate the impact of treatment techniques on the prognosis of nonsurgical and surgical endodontic treatment.•
