Transgender patients have historically been stigmatized both in the medical and dental fields. The purpose of this presentation is to educate medical and dental students, residents, and staff about the medical and psychological needs of transgender individuals. This presentation will also teach dental personnel how to best interact and serve this population of dental patients. Among topics discussed will be how to create a welcoming office environment, risks associated with prolonged hormone use, effects of cross hormone therapy, and surgical options for both FtM and MtF patients.
This presentation will address all the required aspects of care beginning with a description of terms, as well as how to create the proper office environment. This will lead to a discussion of the medical challenges these patients face and how they may effect their dental treatment. There will also be a comprehensive discussion of the various options that transgender patients have concerning “transition.” This will include surgical options.
Dr. Koch will talk about gender affirming surgery, creating a welcoming office environment, risks associated with prolonged cross-sex hormone therapy, and surgical options for both FtM and MtF patients. As a member of the health care community as well as a transwoman, Dr. Koch is well positioned to talk to a health care audience about her own medical and surgical transition and enjoys taking questions from the audience.
The goal of this presentation is to educate health care personnel on the unique challenges presented by many transgender patients.
At the conclusion, participants should be able to …
