Course Description

Overview:

This course on “Antibiotic Stewardship” explores the global threat of bacterial resistance to antibiotics, the challenge of discovery of new antibiotics to overcome the threat, the initiative from the Centers for Disease Control for solutions to the problem, and the most current information to describe the proper therapeutic use of antibiotics to treat dental bacterial infections and endodontic bacterial involvement according to the antibiotic stewardship concept.

The therapeutic recommendations from evidence-based clinical practice guidelines come from published reports in the J American Dental Association (Nov 2019; Nov 2016), the American Association of Endodontists (Fall 2019) and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (Accessed Sept, 2020)

Objectives:
After completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • define the antibiotic stewardship concept;
  • list those resistant bacteria that present urgent threats to life;
  • describe proper therapeutic use of antibiotics to treat dental bacterial infections;
  • list those antibiotics that prolong cardiac Q-T syndrome; and
  • differentiate between nuisance diarrhea and C. diff induced diarrhea associated with antibiotic therapy.
