Course Description

More and more studies are being funded and published which scientifically test the effectiveness of supplements to treat medical conditions. This course will review the supplement industry, FDA regulations and those supplements rising to the top as being beneficial medical therapies, and those remaining questionable as being no better than placebo. Included is the Mayo clinic 's recently published “Herbal Supplements – Evidence Based Guide”. Key products described are CoQ-10, fish oil, echinacea, garlic, ginkgo, ginseng, st. John's wort, turmeric, vit D, magnesium, zinc and foods for medical purposes (Nutraceuticals). Adverse effects and supplements kids take are also described.

After completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • list the five different categories of supplements available to the consumer;
  • list those supplements that have been evaluated through placebo controlled studies;
  • list the supplements that interact with NSAIDs used in dentistry;
  • list those supplements that provide proven health benefits; and
  • describe those supplements that according to Mayo Clinic have no therapeutic value.
