Adolescent Substance Use: Addiction and Recovery

When it comes to making choices about sexual health, substance use can affect adolescent behavior in a variety of ways. Please join HCET for this educational webinar on adolescent substance use and sexual decision-making. Participants will learn about legal and illegal substances in use by some adolescents today, and how to recognize the signs and symptoms of substance use and relapse. Participants will leave this webinar with a better understanding of the stigma of addiction, the effects of substance use on adolescent sexual decision-making, and how to identify and support an adolescent who may be engaging in substance use.

  • Discuss the various substances available to adolescents for use.
  • Explain how substance use can affect adolescent sexual health and decision-making.
  • Recognize signs of substance use and relapse in adolescents.
  • Discuss the stigma of addiction and how it affects adolescent sexual health.


Rachelle Gardner, MA, LCAC has dedicated her career to helping adolescents affected by drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Gardner's passion for helping youth took root while studying psychology at Indiana University. She began her career as an addictions counselor and went on to lead all adolescent programs at Fairbanks for the last 17 years. Through her dedication to providing the best treatment and care for each patient, Gardner has enhanced and expanded the adolescent programs and helped thousands of adolescents and their families find hope and recovery throughout her career. In 2006, Rachelle co-founded, Hope Academy, Indiana's Recovery High School. She serves as the Chief Operating Officer and now dedicates 100% of her time and expertise to the school. Gardner has served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Recovery High Schools for the last 11 years as a committee member, Board Chair and the currently serving as the past chair.
