Course Description
Today's healthcare landscape is complex when it comes to ensuring appropriate pain management. Join other dental healthcare providers for this 1 1/2-hour lecture/discussion on pharmacotherapy management of dental pain. Topics discussed include: Opioid prescribing practices, review of the NC CSRS, how to engage with other healthcare providers (including pharmacies) to discuss controlled substance prescribing patterns, and pharmacological approaches to acute dental pain.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
1. Discuss current issues with opioid prescribing in today's healthcare landscape.
2. Recognize the utility of North Carolina Substance Reporting System and how to enhance interprofesional communication among healthcare providers.
3. Describe pharmacological approaches to acute dental pain and patient considerations.

Faculty

Kimberly Sanders, Pharm.D., is a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. She also has a shared appointment as an assistant professor in the Division of Diagnostic Sciences at the UNC School of Dentistry. Sanders earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Purdue University. She completed a one-year pharmacy practice residency at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center as well as a two-year academic postdoctoral research fellowship in pharmacy practice model advancement at UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. She is a board certified pharmacotherapy specialist and a member of numerous pharmacy professional organizations. She is primarily involved in building a partnership between the schools of pharmacy and dentistry through initiatives to develop, implement, and evaluate clinical pharmacy services in dental practice clinics as well as active in the creation of longitudinal interprofessional education curricula. Sanders' area of scholarship is at the interface of educational and practice-based research with focus on interprofessional education and collaborative practice.

Her collaborative practice experience includes working with providers and care managers in joint appointments to help address the needs of patients at high risk for hospital readmission within the UNC Family Medicine Center care transitions clinic. She also has practice experience within a collaborative geriatrics specialty clinic. Sanders is passionate in focusing her clinical efforts on high risk and vulnerable populations and utilizing a team-based approach to best optimize patient care.

The UNC Continuing Dental Education program is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider. UNC CDE's term of recognition is May 1, 2015 through June 30, 2019. Registration and Fees
The $80.00 registration fee includes course materials, CE credit and parking for the event duration. All registrations must be received by September 26, 2019.

UNC CDE recommends that you do not make air travel arrangements prior to receiving a receipt of payment or confirmation. UNC CDE is not responsible for any travel-related costs.

Cancellations and Refunds
A registration refund, less a $35 fee, will be issued for cancellations received by September 26, 2019. Cancellations must be received in writing either by fax 919-445-2110 or email to cde@dentistry.unc.edu. The cancellation request must include: the name of the course, name of the person registered, name of the person requesting the cancellation, and the reason for the cancellation. No refunds will be issued after September 26, 2019. The UNC School of Dentistry Continuing Dental Education Program cannot be responsible for the refund of any part of the registration fee as a result of emergencies, unforeseen circumstances, or events beyond its control after the cancellation date.

The University reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course due to unforeseen circumstances. In the event of cancellation or postponement, the University will fully refund registration fees but is not responsible for any related costs or expenses to participants, including cancellation fees assessed by hotels, airlines, rental car or travel agencies.

Special dietary requirements will be honored whenever possible. Please be sure to notify our office in writing of your special need no later than September 26, 2019.
