Course Details

Oral cancer remains the most common disfiguring and deadly disease that a dentist, whether generalist or specialist, is likely to encounter in the practice of dentistry. This course provides the clinician with the knowledge to understand the various etiologic factors of oral cancer, and enhances his/her ability to recognize early potentially malignant and malignant changes within the oral cavity. Course attendees will also learn to effectively communicate with their patients regarding appropriate management. This course also discusses the complex nature of such treatment and the complications that may ensue, as well as their potential to affect dental treatment.

Learning Objectives
  • Name conventional and newly-recognized factors for oropharyngeal and oral cancer, including human papillomavirus infection
  • Describe radiographic findings that suggest when a biopsy is appropriate or when a lesion may be monitored instead
  • List the oral complications of oral cancer chemotherapy and their implications for the dentist
  • Outline a management strategy for patients with stage IV oral cancer
  • Define the complications associated with the surgical and medical management of head and neck cancer
