Description: The series will focus on the role of executive functioning skills in word recognition and reading comprehension, highlighting ways that executive skill difficulties may undermine reading processes for learners in grades 2-5.
**All four sessions are mandatory for CTLE credit.
**Participants will receive a copy of the 2nd edition of Dr. Cartwright’s Executive Skills and Reading Comprehension: A Guide for Educators when it is published this spring.
Session 1: Introduction to Executive Skills and Reading
This session will provide an overview of executive function skills and how they support reading processes, with attention to the complexity of reading processes, the role of instruction and executive functions in developing the reading brain, and practical evidence for executive function skills in educators and students.
Session 2: Planning and Organization in Reading
This session will explain the important roles of planning and organization processes in reading, providing practical applications and take-home strategies for educators’ work with students.
Session 3: Cognitive Flexibility and Working Memory in Reading
This session will explain the important roles cognitive flexibility and working memory processes in reading, providing practical applications and take-home strategies for educators’ work with students.
Session 4: Inhibition and Social Understanding in Reading
This session will explain the important roles of inhibition and social understanding processes in reading, providing practical applications and take-home strategies for educators’ work with students. Additionally, this session will wrap up the series, bringing together the learning that has occurred across the four sessions.
Audience: Special education teachers, general education teachers, school and district administrators. Best suited for grades 2-5.
