Class Description

Full morning schedule – 40 hours of musical instruction!

  • Each group will spend a portion of the day rehearsing with their main ensemble.
  • In addition, students choose one of 5 exploratory classes meeting once per day.
  • A portion of every day will include Jazz Band or Symphony Orchestra.
  • All musicians will gather to close each day with reminders and a casual group sing-along.


CONCERT BAND – Entering 5th and 6th grades with 1 or 2 years of playing experience

SYMPHONIC BAND – Entering 7th–9th grades with 1 or more years of playing experience

CONCERT STRINGS – Entering 4th and 5th grades with 1 or 2 years of playing experience

SYMPHONIC STRINGS – Entering 6th–9th grades with 1 or more years of playing experience



Students select one exploratory class they will attend every day for one time block. Each exploratory class is limited to a certain number of students. Any special instruments or equipment needed will be provided. Click here to view full descriptions.


  • Drumming
  • Garage Band
  • Jazz Improvisation
  • Piano
  • Ukulele


Students will participate in either Jazz Band or Symphony Orchestra every day for one time block. Students will indicate their 1st choice when registering. Final placement decisions will be made by faculty.

  • JAZZ BAND: Introduction to jazz…improvisation, musicianship, ensemble play.
  • SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: Strings plus woodwinds, brass, and percussion.


All students will perform in a Summer Music Concert on Friday, July 31, 2020. Families will be invited to attend. Specific details will be provided during the program.

The majority of courses are taught by Franklin Public Schools’ own creative and dedicated faculty and staff. Some courses may be taught by other local educators who have submitted proposals.
