Overview: A general description of the practice and how it can be used with learners with autism spectrum disorder.

Steps for Implementation: Explicit step-by-step directions detailing exactly how to implement a practice, based on the research articles identified in the evidence-base.

Implementation Checklist: The implementation checklist offers a way to document the degree to which practitioners are following the step-by-step directions for implementation, which are based on the research articles identified in the evidence-base.

Evidence-base: The list of references that demonstrate that the practice is efficacious and meets the National Professional Development Center for ASD (NPDC) criteria for being identified as an evidence-based practice.

Discusses why routines are a great vehicle for teaching young children with autism. The natural learning environment for young children with autism is with their family, most often in their home. Everyday routines that occur in the child’s home and with the child’s family are not artificial. They occur and re-occur. These routines provide the framework for learning. As a child learns a routine, he or she learns many different skills that are embedded in that routine. PowerPoint

ASD-4-EI: What Early Interventionists Should Know

10/22/2014

Early interventionists are increasingly likely to encounter a child under age 3 who (a) has been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), (b) is in the process of being diagnosed, or (c) is showing red-flag behaviors that are of concern to the family and/or professionals. This module describes what early interventionists need to know from beginning to end: from initial concerns and red flags through the diagnostic process, to understanding what evidence-based early intervention could and should look like.

Naturalistic Intervention with Toddlers with ASD

Naturalistic Intervention is a collection of practices including environmental arrangement, interaction techniques, and strategies based on applied behavior analysis (ABA) principles, such as modeling and time delay. These practices are designed to help toddlers develop skills in the areas of communication (both prelinguistic and linguistic) and social development by responding to the toddler in ways that are naturally reinforcing, appropriate to the interaction, and build up to more elaborate behaviors. By definition, naturalistic intervention is used across settings and within routines and activities that occur throughout the day by anyone trained in the intervention processes. None

All families should have many chances to review their child’s progress in terms of communication and language development throughout the early years and to change, add or adjust their chosen opportunities based on the child’s growth, development, and success. Other Opportunities to Earn EIS CPE: ECI Library Resources

EISs can earn additional CPEs by seeking out relevant material from the ECI Collection at the Texas Department of State Health Services library.  Resources can be mailed directly to you as DVDs, books, e-books, audio books, streaming video, or even journal articles.  When contacting the library, be sure to specify content requests for resources on Early Childhood Intervention or working with families and children under the age of three.

They include Films on Demand, Learning Seed, and Kinetic Streaming Videos. Registration links for each are found on the Library website. Once registered, you will receive access to the services and videos. 2011 Measuring and Improving Child and Family Outcomes Conference Encore Presentation: 'It's a Family Affair: Support Families to Improve Child Outcomes'

Presented by Robin McWilliam

To get significant improvement in child outcomes, we might need to remember who has the biggest influence on their behavior and learning. Are our supports to families specific and relevant enough to sustain families’ implementing interventions as part of parenting? Blood’s thicker than mud.

The ECI State Office does not offer a certificate for this training. EISs can have their supervisor sign off for completing the presentation and reviewing the documents.
