Introduction to Therapeutic Horticulture
This six-week course is a great way to learn and build foundational knowledge about this growing therapeutic practice. It is intended for a wide audience, including allied health professionals who may want to incorporate plant-based activities into their existing practices, master gardeners or volunteers who work with community members with diverse needs and abilities, educators and other interested people. Students explore how Therapeutic Horticulture supports human health & wellness, including physical, cognitive, emotional, spiritual, and social needs. The course structure promotes vibrant engagement via discussion threads and assignment feedback. This introductory course provides a unique opportunity to research, discuss, and reflect on people/plant relationships.

Virtual Lunchbox Talk: Conserving Gray's Lily through Genetic Diversity Analysis and Demographic Monitoring
One of our state’s biological treasures (Gray’s Lily) is disappearing from the landscape for a variety of reasons. We are working to collect demographic and genetic data across the species range to help inform conservation action to save this unique Southern Appalachian species.

Drawing and Painting a Hummingbird and Columbine: Virtual
In North Carolina, there are many species that pollinate plants, ranging from the checkered beetle which pollinates the Venus flytrap located in NC's eastern wet pine savannas to the ruby-throated hummingbird who visits a wide variety of plants. This class will address the morphology of the hummingbird and the flower of the eastern Columbine. Students will have two weeks between each class to produce a black and white value drawing and a watercolor.

Entomology

This course is designed for a broad audience. Students learn insect family recognition and common species identification, insect ecology and conservation, basic life cycle biology, and how to improve insect habitat and conservation in the urban environment. No prerequisites.

Honeybee Hive Tour at the CCG

Come learn about one of the world’s most fascinating insects. Bees are responsible for pollinating one third of the world’s food and produce one of the sweetest treats around. Participants explore a real live hive with certified beekeeper, Anne Glauber. Free, preregistration required.

Native Plant Propagation

This course is intended for a broad audience. Students learn fundamentals of vegetative propagation and techniques for propagating southeastern native plants by means of stem and root cuttings. Class includes hands-on propagation and a tour of the vegetative propagation facilities of NCBG.

Native Southeastern Medicinal Plants

Explore the beauty of native southeastern medicinal plants through field identification. Using the expansive resources of the NCBG display gardens and the Piedmont Nature Trails behind the Garden, students take in the abundant medicine that our local flora has to offer. Topics include field identification, ethical gathering and harvesting, history and lore of each plant, therapeutic and medicinal uses as well as preparations. No prerequisites.

Curious preschoolers will love this camp, designed to provide playful, hands-on experiences with the natural world in a small group setting. Watch for frogs, listen for birdsong, smell the flowers, touch slimy worms, and taste from the herb garden. A new theme will be introduced each day through nature walks, crafts, stories, puppet shows, and group play. Snack (brought from home) included. Intermediate Colored Pencil
Registration Closed
This course adds to the information covered in Beginning Colored Pencil and hones skills in color, value and layering. Students will be introduced to new surfaces and techniques. This elective is intended for students who wish to develop a strong, more advanced-level skill in colored pencil. Prerequisites: Beginning Colored Pencil, Intermediate Drawing.

Advanced Drawing: Botanical Plates: Virtual
In this course, students work towards refining drawing skills in creating a plant portrait. Specifics to this class include rendering a tonal botanical plate, working with live plants, studying plant anatomy, as well as mapping and cross-contour drawing for accuracy. Prerequisites: Intermediate Drawing, Composition.

Flowering Plant Families
This course builds on the information covered in Plant Taxonomy and focuses on the study of plant diversity by targeting twenty major and fairly stable plant families of flowering plants found in North Carolina. Classroom discussions of evolutionary adaptations and relationships are combined with field studies in the Garden and close-up examination of representative examples.

Hybrid Lunchbox Talk: Natural Communities of Agape Center for Environmental Education
Greg will describe the natural communities found within the portion of Camp Agape (approximately 300 acres in Harnett County, NC) where trails are located and a total of seven different natural communities were identified. These natural communities include Piedmont Levee Forest, Piedmont Alluvial Forest, Piedmont/Mountain Semipermanent Impoundment, Low Elevation Seep, Mesic Mixed Hardwood Forest, Dry-Mesic Oak-Hickory Forest, and Dry Oak-Hickory Forest. This is a report on Greg’s Independent Study Project for the Advanced Certificate in Native Plants.
